Our Vision:

to be a world recognised woodland garden
showcasing and protecting the Rhododendron Genus

Welcome to Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden

We are an independent non-profit community organisation which is developing and maintaining a multi-award winning private garden, aimed at showcasing and conserving the Rhododendron Genus. In our botanical paradise, we grow over half of the known approximately 1000 species of rhododendrons in the world.

Located near the port city of Burnie in Tasmania, come and discover our 11ha garden which houses over 24,000 plants in a woodland setting. It features rhododendrons from the icy Himalayas to tropical New Guinea, and across the Pacific to the Americas, all laid out in the geographical arrangement from where they originated along with their companion plants.

"I have visited most of the best rhododendron gardens in both the Northern and Southern hemisphere and so can say without any doubt that the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden is the most exciting large scale rhododendron garden I have seen in the last 20 years."

Kenneth Cox (from Glendoick, Scotland), Patron of the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden

It is my great pleasure to write this message for our Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden.

The Garden was conceived in 1981 and since then has evolved into a beautiful and tranquil space with large water courses and other features in a natural amphitheatre covering some 11 hectares.

Dedicated to the conservation and display of Rhododendron plants, the Garden has grown to encompass species from the Himalayan mountains to New Guinea, across the Pacific to the Americas and around the world. There are over 24,000 plants throughout the Garden.

All of this has been made possible by the work of dedicated members and volunteers who give their time freely to ensure the success of the Garden, which is privately owned by those members. It is a testament to their work, dedication and commitment that the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden has gained national and international acclaim.

While the peak flowering periods of mid-September to mid-November are excellent times to visit, Autumn colours show a different view from May to June. And, of course, the tranquillity of the Gardens is available to visitors throughout the year.

I congratulate all members on their outstanding contributions to the Garden. You demonstrate all that is best about our Tasmanian community as you work, maintain and operate this multi award-winning Garden.  On behalf of a grateful State, I thank you all. I am proud of you, and proud to continue my ongoing relationship with our Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden, as Patron."

Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker Ac, Governor Of Tasmania, and Patron of the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden

What our Visitors Think

This place is an absolute must for all, you won't be disappointed. 11 hectares of lovely gardens, ornate structures and lakes carefully and lovingly constructed and maintained by its wonderful team of dedicated volunteers. The gardens have certainly grown since I was last here, some 8 years ago.

The yellow and orange/yellow rhododendrons were the most fragrant and the lip stick, red rhododendrons were the most impressive.

Deb Andrei

The Garden was created by members of the Emu Valley Rhododendron Society in 1981, and is now owned by members of Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden Inc.

As a primarily voluntary organisation, membership is vital to creating a unique garden of international interest, and to see that the Garden is further developed and maintained for future generations.

It is entirely due to the efforts of our members and volunteers that the Garden has achieved the level of development that we enjoy today.
